About
Drazen Beatovic was born in Sokolac, Bosnia and Hercegovina on September 25, 1960. His ability to learn showed at the early age of 4 when he was fluently reading daily newspapers his dad would bring after work. As the top student at Sarajevo faculty electrical engineering program, the learning path led to obtaining a master’s degree and winning a full scholarship for post-doctorate studies at Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI), Boston, Massachusets.
Upon completing his doctorate and receiving an offer from MIT to lecture as an assistant professor, he politely declined the offer. He moved to Canada with his brother Srdjan and dad Jovan. His humanity towards caring for his sick dad and his whole family was a deciding point in his move to Canada.
His career path led him to become a solution architect for many notable software products, spanning a variety of software solutions from financial, insurance, real estate, government services, health, imaging software, hedge funds and many more in both the US and Canada.
Above all, he was a devoted dad to Teodora and Aleksandra and step-dad to Goran, organizing many travels, supporting his kids in sports activities, music and dance and many more. During COVID, he was an enthusiastic teaching assistant to our daughter Teo, helping with her computer science and math studies. He organized fun IT dates for his wife and him to learn about bleeding-edge technology. This time was cherished as it provided space for family to connect and spend time together. Happy to see the pandemic going away, Drazen started planning our next trip. Unfortunately, news about his cancer devasted us all. His ability to learn showed most brightly once again. He learned about his cancer and could communicate with his doctor in full medical terms after just a month of researching the disease. His oncologist asked if he was a resident oncologist somewhere.
He battled the cancer with remarkable will and determination. Unfortunately, the treatments stopped working. He kept a sense of humour until the end of his life. A few days before passing away, when he could only move his eyes, we asked him to blink if he knew who is Marina - his wife - he said NO by blinking. we asked him, “Do you know who your brother Srdjan is?" again, he said NO by blinking. When his daughter entered the room, we told her that Dad did not recognize anybody. We all turned toward him, and there was a big grin on his face.
He will always be missed in our hearts.
Marina, Teodora, Aleksandra, Goran and Srdjan
